Samsung Galaxy A13 review: a simple smartphone

The current trend is towards 50 megapixel sensors that can be found on a growing share of smartphones, from entry-level to very high-end. The Galaxy A13 is no exception, combining this main sensor with a wide-angle optic that opens at f/1.8. A second 5 Mpx module with ultra wide angle (f / 2.4) is accompanied by it. More anecdotally, two sensors of 2 Mpx each (f / 2.4 optics) are dedicated to depth measurement and macro.

Main module: 50 MP, f/1.8

In its price range, the Galaxy A13 faces Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 11 with a similar sensor. The results of both are reasonable. Samsung’s model exposes scenes better, but suffers from digital noise and tends to emphasize details too much. The treatment is softer on the Xiaomi model snapshot. In contrast, the contours are less clear, as can be seen on our map (colored dots). These observations apply to the center of the image, which we have isolated here. The edge areas of our shots are completely blurry and unusable.

Night shots are less successful with the Galaxy A13 than with the Redmi Note 11, which suddenly delivers content so parasitized by noise that it becomes almost unusable. The Samsung model favors smoothing, but has the merit of being more readable.

The Galaxy A13 does not score particularly well in its price range, but it is clear that it does not do much better than its predecessor, the Galaxy A12.

50MP mode

It is possible to shoot 50 Mpx from the interface of the smartphone photo app. This is of little importance as it does not give more details.

Ultra wide angle module: 5 Mpx, f/2.2, 123°

The ultra-wide angle is not the specialty of the Galaxy A13, of which it is better to prefer the main module to get really usable shots. The low definition of 5 Mpx counteracts that and results in a blatant lack of sharpness. Details are smoothed out in the center of the image, while distortion and blurring in the periphery spoil the party even more. Go ahead at night: the center of the images is barely legible and the sides are not at all.

Front module, portrait mode, video

Samsung equips its Galaxy A13 with an 8 Mpx sensor on the front with an optical aperture at f/2.2. When recording, we observe the contributions of the software processing applied by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the flattening is too present. Added to this is a slightly exaggerated but adjustable background blur as on all South Korean smartphones. Finally, the Galaxy A13 allows you to shoot in Full HD at 30 fps, front and rear, without stabilization.
