Small Urban Crossover

High production costs and low profit margins forced manufacturers to exit the small city car market. The Peugeot 108, Citroën C1 and Renault Twingo is not extended. Other manufacturers are going 100% electric and some like Toyotaresist with the Aygo X.
You have before your eyes the new city car of the Japanese brand that partly takes the name of its predecessor with an X at the end. This “cross” indicates two things: that it takes away its independence from its predecessor, which was the result of a joint program with PSA at the time with cousin de Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 and that it is now considered an “urban mini-crossover” by Toyota. A way of retaining fashion and selling it more expensively.
Based on the latest Yaris’ GA-B platform, heavily truncated, it measures:
3.70 m and is positioned as a competitor of the Suzuki Ignis† Toyota has put a lot of work into the lines of its model and in particular the rear part which stands out with its wide hips and two-tone body. At the front, the vertical grille, horizontal bonnet and C-shaped headlamps are accentuated by strong colors such as Chili Red.
The crossover touch is provided by wing extensions in raw plastic, increased ground clearance (+11 mm) and large diameter rims for the category, up to 18 inches! That means lower comfort than standard tires and higher prices when it comes time to change tires.
The interior is dark but shows a good presentation quality. The controls are easily accessible.
Inside, the Japanese combines simplicity and fantasy. The design is original, especially the central part of the dashboard with a large 9-inch multimedia screen equipped with Android/Carplay compatibility. It joins a very rich endowment for the category, including remote-controlled automatic air conditioning, a JBL audio system with subwoofer, heated front seats, an induction charger, etc. which partly justifies the higher prices than the competition (see competition page). The quality of the plastics is basic, but it must be recognized that the finish is really correct compared to the competition.
For living too, the Aygo does well with more space than before for the front passengers and a slight improvement in the rear seats. But don’t expect a miracle, the Aygo remains a city car of 3.70 m, so beyond 1.80 m space is limited. A place not recommended for claustrophobics as here the windows are ajar and access on board is practical in Fosbury as the opening of the rear doors is limited. It is essentially the trunk that takes advantage of the increase in dimensions to offer a load volume (231 liters) sufficient to meet the needs of everyday life. The 50/50 split and fold-down bench seat allows the latter to climb to 831 litres.
