the Spaniard Fernando Alonso did not hide his frustration this Sunday evening in Melbourne after crossing the finish line of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix in last position at the wheel of his Alpine.
The Alpine driver was unlucky at the Australian Grand Prix this weekend as the Spaniard appeared to be able to put his single-seater in the front row during qualifying this Saturday when a hydraulic problem disrupted his planes. This Sunday in the race, Alonso – who started from tenth on the grid anyway – at one point took P4 at the foot of the podium thanks to an opposite strategy – from Hard to Medium.
However, an ill-timed Safety Car after an incident on lap 24 shattered his hopes of scoring points. Fernando Alonso went through the pit lane on lap 39 under a Virtual Safety Car regime and when his Medium tires deteriorated he had to return to it on lap 53. He is the last to cross the finish line.
† To be quite honest, I’m disgusted by this weekend. It’s hard for me to accept this result and the bad luck that happened to us in Saudi Arabia and again here in Melbourne. † said the Alpine driver in Melbourne on Sunday evening.
“Today we were able to aim for sixth place, the podium was even possible for the problem we encountered in qualifying yesterday. Our strategy was right and the car performed well on hard tyres. The pace was there against our direct rivals who left for Mediums, but the Safety Car cemented the positions and that put an end to our hopes. †
“Overtaking was difficult today, especially in this peloton where everyone could use the DRS at the end of the race. We then downgraded our Medium tires and therefore had to stop again. There are still twenty races to go and I hope that luck will smile on us for the rest of the season! †
After the Australian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso is in fourteenth place in the drivers’ championship with two points from three races.
