Quartararo takes control – GP Inside

Fabio Quartararo set the fastest time in the third free practice session of the Grand Prix of the Americas, ahead of the Ducatis of Jack Miller and Enea Bastianini. Johann Zarco (5th) also comes straight into Q2.

Fabio Quartararo has arguably one of the worst top speeds in Austin, making up for lost time on the straights in other parts of the circuit. Especially the last sector, where he leaves everyone behind, is profitable for him. This Saturday, his pace was such that he set the best time of the weekend during the third free practice session. His concentration did not fail despite the many drivers playing strategy to try to “suck” his wheel. A remarkable achievement, because his 2’02.361 puts him 2 tenths of the absolute record.

Winner at Losail a month earlier, Enea Bastianini (2nd) is comfortable, finishing just 59 thousandths behind the world champion. He is 27 ahead of Jack Miller (3rd), who puts a second Ducati in the top-3. In fact, three are in the top-5 thanks to Johann Zarco (5th), who fell on his last lap, but who had done the most by putting in 2’05.542 the day before. With Francesco Bagnaia (6th) and Luca Marini (10th) also qualifying in Q2, Ducati is the most progressive manufacturer.

Marc Marquez (4th) still hasn’t dominated a session, on the track where he won seven times in eight races, but he is in the lead car. His teammate Pol Espargaro (7th) will try to get on one of the first two lines later in qualifying. HRC’s third man, Takaaki Nakagami (9th), will be there. For Alex Marquez (18th) it will be necessary to go through the repechage.

The Spaniard will find his compatriot Alex Rins (12th) there, who failed to improve in FP3, unlike the other Suzuki rider Joan Mir (8th). No Aprilia in the top-10 that directly qualifies for Q2: Aleix Espargaro (11th) misses by 76 thousandths, Maverick Vinales (13th) for 164. But the brand further back remains KTM, whose best representative – Brad Binder – is only seventeenth is .
