Conditions of our preview
Offline we were able to participate in a one hour session on Nintendo Switch Sports. Enough to get an overview of each of the disciplines on offer at the game’s launch.
The mainstream experience we love so much
When it releases on April 29, Nintendo Switch Sports will feature six activities against the five experienced in Wii Sports: football, badminton, volleyball, chambara, bowling and tennis† A fairly varied menu on paper that will be expanded this autumn with an extra addition: golf† The update will thankfully be free and will do a bit of a program refresh that we may have quickly bypassed. When you start your first game, there will be no more Miis in the spotlight, although you can choose to trade them in for your brand new avatars. The embodied characters take on a more “chibi” and playful look that, frankly, won’t displease us. Each discipline comes with a welcome guide that dictates which moves to make for all shots. And from the start, Nintendo Switch Sports reminds us of the sweet memories of minigames for the whole family. The challenges easily lend themselves to short sessions in joy and good humor. The controls are quite intuitive and comfortable for any sport. Please note that it is more sensible to equip your Joy-cons with wristbands before starting the game.
If the exercises can be limited to simple gestures, they also lend themselves easily to more expert challenges. In tennis, for example, you can modify your movement to do a few lifts and cuts with your ball† Along with badminton, these are the sports we think are the easiest and most fun to learn. Volleyball, more technical, is nevertheless just as much fun. Your skills can be tested all over the world in online play, promised as the mainstay of this new experience.† So it will be a matter of trying to get into the pro league of each discipline. The online functionality has not yet been tested by us, but it is interesting in terms of competitiveness.
Both new and great classics
In addition to the new disciplines that are easy to discover such as Tennis and Badminton, some classics offer remarkable originalities: for example, the bowling alley has optional obstacle courses† This is also the case with the chambaras, these duels that Wii Sports Resort which consist of ejecting the opponent from the platform by giving him saber blows and by parrying. If the activity can be as enjoyable as it is fast, it offers different kinds of accessories for good replayability : one sword, one charge sword, or two swords. Football is ultimately our gray area† The leg strap, a great addition for the episode, is currently only compatible with penalties. Until this summer, traditional matches will only be played by hand with huge balls. And despite a sprint meter, the heats, which are harder to master than the rest of the sports, currently lack dynamism and liveliness.

Our impressions
For now, Nintendo Switch Sports promises an experience that will soon bring back fond memories of Wii Sports. While retaining some classics that aren’t devoid of new additions, Nintendo is dusting off its consumer license with welcome new features. However, the game will not show all possibilities at launch and will have to arm itself with its summer updates to convince especially on its football.
