Tunisia will receive beautiful people this Monday 11 April. Indeed, a delegation of European parliamentarians is currently on its way to Tunis. These MEPs, who belong to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, will stay with us until 14 April 2022. Three days will not be too long to get a clear picture of the structural and economic problems of the fledgling democracy, but above all to read in the play of the head of state, Kais Saied. MEPs will also talk to civil society and political parties, just to collect all the bells and whistles. Needless to say, the opposition has prepared all its weapons to obscure as much as possible the actions of the resident of the palace of Carthage…
There is no doubt that this journey is an additional burden on the shoulders of the President of the Republic. He and the government of Najla Bouden will have to explain themselves on their roadmap, on the noises about bullying against opponents, former deputies, journalists, etc. European parliamentarians do not go to Tunis with a blank page, they have certainly heard of the unrest in Tunis on the dissolution of Parliament and the passage of certain agitators before the military courts. These are practices that are not common in Europe and therefore per se offensive, but they also know that they are dealing with a democracy in the making that is barely 10 years old and still on paper…
The whole point of this journey is this: trying to understand and accept to some extent the imperfections of a fledgling democracy, which has no common ground with European regimes, some of which are based on decades of democratic experience. It is clear that the ex-president of the now dissolved parliament, Rached Ghannouchi and his entire clique, if MEPs do indeed give them the chance, will do everything they can to ensure that parliamentarians are as unindulgent as possible. being with Kais Saied…
For the opposition, the press release from France after the official dissolution of parliament damn it looked like a disappointmentbecause the firm condemnation she expected never came. The European Union (EU) press release signed by the head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, uses almost the same terms as those used by France. So again, there is no condemnation of the fatal blow to Parliament, it is a second cold shower for Saied’s opponents. And even better – or worse, it depends: there is even a small certificate of satisfaction for”progress in developing an economic reform agenda”. Well, from here we find it hard to follow the Europeans because the reform program remains a complete headache for the executive branchbut the most important thing for Saied is that the EU gives him a favorable bias on his ability to reform the country…
There remains one other demand from the EU, which will no doubt be remembered by MEPs visiting Tunis:a global dialogue involving all political partiesand national organizations. For the time being we are not going on the road, on the contrary† So how are the MEPs going to succeed there, everything and everyone has failed so far? We are curious to know…
But what should not be forgotten is that the European partner had seized aid of 300 million euros because the trajectory of the Tunisian head of state is very problematic. Part of the guarantees that the Council of the EU and the European Commission expect depends on the travel of MEPs. Currently, the Council of the EU is chaired by a “friend” of Tunisia, the French head of state, Emmanuel Macron; Tunis has an interest in seizing the opportunity to take it all, as Macron’s mandate at the head of the EU ends in June. if he manages to get rid of Marine Le Pen in the second round of the presidential election this April 24…
