The United States has ordered non-essential staff from its consulate in Shanghai to leave the city amid an epidemic outbreak and strict containment measures in the metropolis, the US embassy said on Tuesday, April 12.
China’s economic capital is facing the largest increase in cases since the start of the pandemic. Authorities have locked up nearly all 25 million residents and are placing those who test positive in quarantine centers.
It is in this context that the United States Department of State has: “ordered the departure [de son personnel] due to the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak”a spokesman for the US embassy said in a statement.
US diplomats have also informed Chinese authorities “of their concerns for the safety and well-being of American citizens”clarifies the text.
Isolation in quarantine centers
China is one of the last countries in the world to adopt a strict zero Covid strategy. It consists of several measures: detention as soon as some cases arise, separation of people who test positive from the rest of the population, visas issued drop by drop, quarantine on arrival on the territory or even tracing movements.
The Chinese Ministry of Health reported more than 23,000 new positive cases in Shanghai on Tuesday. Nearly all of the 25 million inhabitants are still confined to their homes and some struggle to get food. Many of those who tested positive were also placed in solitary confinement in large quarantine centers set up in exhibition halls or prefabricated structures.
Last week, the US embassy announced: ” permit “ non-essential consulate staff to leave Shanghai. She also believed that American citizens were at risk of being confronted with a “random application” anti-covid restrictions.
