No contract extension in sight for LeBron James at the Lakers

The Lakers have different priorities this spring and summer, including finding a new coachbut they can renew LeBron James for two seasons and $97.1 million.

Keeping the 2020 Finals MVP, who still had a huge season (30.3 points average), through 2025 would obviously be the best news for the future of the franchise. But we don’t seem to be moving in the direction of this scenario.

‘We didn’t talk about that’ assured LeBron James in his final speech before the holiday. “Technically, because we can’t talk about it yet with the collective labor agreement. You have to wait until later in the year. Even I and Rich Paul, my agent, we cannot discuss with Rob Pelinka and the management because of the collective labor agreement. So when we can, we’ll see. †

According to information from The Athleticthe Lakers star is heading to the end of his contract, which expires in 2023, and will not sign this extension.

This doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be leaving Los Angeles at the end of next season. Nevertheless, he should follow the same logic as he did during his second stint in Cleveland: negotiating season after season.

A logical choice, given his age (over 37), and especially becausewe know he wants to play with his son Bronny† The latter could arrive in the NBA as early as 2024 at the earliest, and LeBron James will have to have the freedom to make things easier if he wants to sign in the same franchise as the one his son will draft.
